Household safety. Store cleaning chemicals and other household chemicals out of reach from children and pets. Washer and Dryer safety. Clean the lint filter on the dryer after each use. Keep the area around the dryer very clean and vacuum behind and under the dryer frequently. The lint from a dryer is extremely flammable. Turn off the water to the washing machine when not in use. Teach your children that nothing should be put in the dryer except for clothing. Kitchen / Bathroom safety. Teach your children that metal is not to be placed in microwave ovens. Remember to remove the doors from any unused refrigerators. If your freezer has a locking door, lock the door and keep the key out of reach from children do that they do not lock one another in the freezer. Teach your children that electrical devices should not be used around electricity. Today's To-Do List: - Lock up my dad's old gun.
- Change smoke detector battery.
- Purchase a carbon monoxide detector and install in my home in addition to my smoke detector.
- Teach family how to use that nifty space heater safely so we do not burn down our home.
- Create an emergency action plan
- Make an emergency phone number list.
- Draw layout of house and show emergency locations.
- Teach family what to do in case of fire.
- Teach family where we will meet once outside so that we know everyone is safe.
- Teach family what to do in a tornado.
- Teach family what to do if a stranger breaks in.
- Organize a first aid kit.
- Teach spouse and kids first aid.
- Create an emergency kit. (Flashlight, batteries, water, food, radio, blanket, knife, saw, hammer, dust mask.)
- Purchase two or more small fire extinguishers for my house.
- Teach my spouse how to put out a grease fire by simply setting a lid on the pan. (Get it out before you need it.)
- Teach kids how to use 911.
- Purchase new windshield wipers for car.
- Fill windshield wiper solution.
- Change oil in car.
- Check belts on car.
- Check hoses on car.
- Check tires on car for wear.
- Check tires on car for proper air inflation.
- Check fireplace for safety.
- Check garage for any open containers.
- Do not store any flammables or combustibles near heat sources.
- Stop on way home and pick-up milk and bread.
- Ask to see the kids homework and check for accuracy.
- Tell them that I love them.
Never put off until tomorrow, what you can do today. If you do put it off until tomorrow, you may never have the chance to finish everything that is on the list. Tomorrow may just be a little to late. | When neighbors leave town, sometimes they leave many lights on timers inside the house. Many times this is a giveaway that no one is home when it snows. As part of neighborhood watch, so that no one thinks your neighborhood is an easy target for break-ins here are a couple of tips. Pick-up the door-to-door flyers that are placed on front doors. Collect newspapers and mail, etc. Mow their front yard. Drive up their driveway, leaving car tracks and footprints in the snow to make their house look lived in.
