  1. Change smoke detector battery.
  2. Purchase a carbon monoxide detector and install in your home in addition to your smoke detector.
  3. Teach family how to use that nifty space heater safely so we do not burn down our home.
  4. Create an emergency action plan
  5.         Make an emergency phone number list.
  6.         Draw layout of house and show emergency locations.
  7.         Teach family what to do in case of fire.
  8.         Teach family where we will meet once outside so that we know everyone is safe.
  9.         Teach family what to do in a tornado.
  10.         Teach family what to do if a stranger breaks in.
  11. Purchase two or more small fire extinguishers for my house.
  12. Teach my spouse how to put out a grease fire by simply setting a lid on the pan. (Get it out before you need it.)
  13. Do not leave the stove top on and unattended.
  14. Do not store combustibles such as paper towels or cloth towels near the stove.
  15. Do not leave pan handles sticking out from the stove top when cooking.
  16. Teach kids how to use 911.
  17. Have the fireplace checked for safety on a regular basis.
  18. Check garage for any open flammable containers.
  19. Do not store any flammables or combustibles near heat sources.
  20. Do not burn candles where children or pets can get near the candle flame.
  21. Do not burn candles near drapery or other combustible materials.
  22. Sleep with bedroom doors closed.
  23. Do not run electrical cords under carpet.
  24. Do not run electrical cords through windows, walls, doors, or floors.
  25. Cut the ends off of any electrical devices that have bad cords or plugs.
