Everyday DOT issues.

  • Are you conducting annual drug and alcohol screening?  What would be considered random by a person of reasonable intelligence is not normally random in the eyes of the DOT?  The answer will surprise you.
  • Are you conducting annual reviews of employee files and documenting the files the way that the DOT and DPS want you to do so?
  • Do you know what to look for when reviewing driver logs?
  • Are you keeping records of maintenance on vehicles?
  • Do you know when your next maintenance is scheduled?
  • Do you have an accident log?
  • Does your accident log include Haz-Mat spills?
  • Are all of your Haz-Mat employees trained?
  • Are your non-drivers trained?
  • Is your Federal Haz-Mat Transportation registration valid?
  • Do you have a copy of the Haz-Mat registration in each truck?
  • Do you have the required hazardous materials insurance on your fleet?  This is above an beyond the fleet insurance.
  • Is your State Haz-Mat insurance form up to date?
  • Have you conducted the DOT annual driver file review this year?
  • Hazardous material training, is that the same as Hazard Communication?
  • Hazardous Materials, is that the same as a hazardous substance?
  • Hazardous material job specific training.
  • Hazardous material general training.
  • Hazardous material CDL driver training.
  • Department of Transportation DOT Shipping papers requirements?
  • Department of Transportation DOT manifests?
  • How do you know the meaning of reportable quantity (RQ)
  • Proper Shipping Name is found in which table?
  • The shipping class of a flammable liquid is 3, how do you "know" that?
  • PG I PG II PG II packing group packaging group involve knowing the boiling points.
  • How do I determine if a material is flammable instead of combustible.
  • I was told that flammables have a flash point of less than 100o F.  If the flash point is 139o F, can that product ever be a flammable liquid?
  • What if the flash point is above 200o F?

If you offer hazardous materials (Haz-mat or Haz mat) for shipment, you probably need a DOT hazardous materials permit.  This may be so even if you do not transport the material with your own vehicles.

It is a Federal offense if you do not tell Fed-Ex, UPS or any other carrier that your package contains hazardous materials.

When we talk about Hazardous Materials (Haz-mat or Haz mat) as it relates to the DOT transportation laws, we are talking about something totally different from OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard and training.

If your salesperson sells hazardous materials (Haz-mat or Haz mat) and never see the product unless it has already arrived at the customers site, the salesman should have DOT Haz-Mat training.

If your order entry person enters orders for hazardous materials (Haz-mat or Haz mat) and never sees the product, the order entry person should have DOT Haz-Mat training.

If you have a packager in the production department who packages hazardous materials (Haz-mat or Haz mat) the packager must have Haz-Mat training.  Even the supervisor of the packager needs DOT Haz-Mat training even though that supervisor does not work in the shipping department.

If you have DOT regulated vehicles or if you carry Hazardous Materials there are several issues which we can help you with.  If this applies to your Company the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT including the FAA) and your state police all have the same interest in you.  Most of these laws overlap.  A comprehensive plan can save you many headaches.

Did you know that some transportation companies will not take handwritten shipping papers for hazardous materials?  One example is UPS.

Did you know that Fed-Ex has some of the strictest regulations regarding hazardous material shipments?  Did you know that if you ship via Fed-Ex, there is an excellent chance that an FAA hazardous materials expert may spot check your package and paperwork as it is waiting to be loaded or unloaded?  If the FAA finds something wrong with your package or paperwork, they will come see you sooner or later.

Did you know that you or your salesperson can go to jail if they carry a hazardous material onto a passenger aircraft either in their luggage, briefcase or pocket?

If you ship hazardous materials, do you know the difference between a hazardous material and a hazardous substance.
